John Wort Hannam is a folk artist from Alberta, Canada who writes and performs his own brand of Folk Roots music he calls Blue Collar Roots Music. Songs about small towns, the working class, and the land.
In the spring of 2007 John released his third CD entitled "Two-Bit Suit" to rave reviews across Canada, the UK, and Europe.
In May of 2007 John became one of the newest New Folk Winner's at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. John joins an impressive list of other finalist and winners that includes: John Gorka, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle, James McMurtry, and Robert Earle Keen.
John won the Grand Prize for Best Song at the 2007 Calgary Folk Festival Song Writing Competition. He won "Best Performance" at this competition in 2006, Judges Discretionary Award in 2005 and won the Grand Prize for Best Song also at the 2004 competition.
John is a two-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee and a Western Canadian Music Award nominee in the category of "Outstanding Songwriter".
John Wort Hannam is also a 2005 CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award Winner, a National Campus Radio Association 2005 Dig Your Roots Canadian Song Writing Competition Winner.
In the 2004 Awards Poll of Penguin Eggs, Canada’s national folk and roots magazine, John Wort Hannam was chosen as one of the best newcomer’s of 2003 by music critic Tom Coxworth and his debut CD "pocket full of holes" was chosen as one of the top ten recordings of 2003 by music critic Vic Bell.
John’s second CD "Dynamite and ‘Dozers" received international airplay across Canada, the US and Australia. In the 2005 Awards Poll of Penguin Eggs "Dynamite and ‘Dozers" was included on four music critics top ten lists. In the US, this recording was CD of the week for March 2005 on Rich Warren’s Midnight Special. The Lethbridge Herald writes, "Dynamite and ‘Dozers" should establish Wort Hannam as one of Canada’s premiere songwriters." The CD was on CKUA’s Top 100 recordings for 2004 and remained on the Top 10 Roots CD's of Victoria's "The Village 900" after 5 consecutive months.
John Wort Hannam’s live show has been described as "amazingly captivating". The Calgary Folk Club wrote, "John Wort Hannam took the stage, and in short work took the audience as well. John wins over the "everyman" in all of us." This was evidenced recently when John played Vic Bell’s Nickelodeon Folk Club and set an all-time CD sales record for an opener for the 24 years of the club's running.
