Richard Wood


From Prince Edward Island on Canada's East coast comes fiddling dynamo Richard Wood. He has been wowing audiences since he was 12 years old.

Richard has won countless championships as a step dancer and fiddler. Twice he earned the Don Messer Memorial Trophy for top Maritime fiddler. In 1998 he won Instrumental Artist and Roots / Traditional Artist at the East Coast Music Awards in Halifax.

Richard has performed for audiences at concerts and festivals across Canada, in the United States, Japan, the Middle East and the United Kingdom. Television appearances have included performances with The Chieftains and Shania Twain on David Letterman and Good Morning America, Parliament Hill before a crowd of half a million on Canada Day and also The Celtic Electric CBC special with Jean Butler of River Dance and many top artists from around the world. Richard also appeared in Billboard Magazine and in a BBC TV special in Scotland, and was featured in the Maclean's MagazinesSpecial Edition First Issue of The 21st Century, and was featured on The Vicki Gabereau show February 2001. He toured the East Coast of United States with The Chieftains and played Carnegie Hall in New York on St. Patrick's Day. Richard also performed for Queen Elizabeth II at a Jubilee Gala on 10 October 2002 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, which was a CBC Television Production. Along the way, he has also worked with Burton Cummings, Gordie Sampson, Michelle Wright and countless other international superstars.

Richard has completed many tours of Europe, including Germany, France, Belgium And Denmark. He has also performed on virtually every folk festival stage in Canada, and travelled to Japan with Prime Minster Chretien, where he performed for the Emperor, and Prince and also a delegation of Prime Ministers. On 1st July 2000 he performed at Expo in Hanover, Germany and later for the Governor Generals Awards, which were broadcast nationally on CBC Television. Richard also played at a reception for Prince Charles at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, and has performed all over the world with The Chieftains, from the USA to Italy to Asia.

His high energy show is a combination of fiddling virtuosity and stunning showmanship. He continues to evolve an innovative approach to traditional Celtic jigs, reels, and strathspeys, tempering the mix with sweet airs and lively polkas.
